The passion for this world and its origins really comes through in these first six episodes and is what makes it so addicting. Despite a robust cast and 30-ish-minute runtimes for each episode, the show never seems like it’s shortchanging any of its characters, pulling you into each of their stories. Thankfully, there’s more to the series underneath that surface, making it both easy to follow The Legend of Vox Machina and also easy to get hooked on it. On the surface, these characters are easy to recognize and understand, so newcomers will do exactly that. The gunslinger is a loner and the mystical woods elf controls plants. The strong guy is kind of dumb, and he’s friends with the virtuous little cleric. It also helps that, for the most part, these characters are fantasy tropes built on the game that helped create fantasy tropes. It’s clear that these two were definitely conceived as the “pilot” Kickstarter episodes, and they function exactly like that, giving hints at bigger stories to come. The first two episodes do a perfect job of laying out the show’s dynamic and pulling you into all the characters. While you’re sure to get more out of The Legend of Vox Machina having been a fan of Critical Role or knowledgeable of tabletop gaming, none of that is required. Now it is set to premiere on January 28 on Amazon Prime. Amazon swooped in and picked the series up, ordering another 14 episodes of the show. That kind of money allowed them to expand the special into a 10-episode season and also attracted the attention of bigger fish. It did more than well, breaking Kickstarter records for Film & Video and raising $11.3 million dollars. In 2019 Critical Role launched a Kickstarter campaign to create a 22-minute animated special based on the Vox Machina campaign. The name Vox Machina means “voice machine” and is a nod to the fact that everyone participating is a voice actor. Their first campaign was a massive success, and they’ve gone on to grow into a sizeable content juggernaut on the internet and are now on their third campaign, all based in the land of Exandria. But with today’s announcement, we’re confident that the stories we tell will keep expanding into realms of entertainment beyond what we can even imagine. So first, for those of you who don’t know what Critical Role is and are too lazy to go to their FAQ page, here are the basics: The web series is a live-streamed RPG game put on by a collection of voice actors. “Seeing the stories and characters from our first campaign come to life in The Legend of Vox Machina was a dream realized, and we are absolutely buzzing with excitement to do it again with Mighty Nein. “ Critical Role’s livestream campaigns are the spark that lit the flame for our worldwide audience,” said Willingham in a statement. And it sounds like there may be even more Critical Role spinoff projects on the horizon. A third season of The Legend of the Vox Machina is already in the works. According to Amazon’s official description, “ Mighty Nein follows a group of criminals and misfits who are the only ones that can prevent the kingdom from plunging into chaos when an arcane artifact capable of reshaping reality falls into the wrong hands.”
